Upcoming events & current projects

coffee mornings

A Coffee Pop In is held the first Tuesday of each month, 10.30 - 12.00.

Tea, coffee and delicious home baking is available and also lots of friendly chat.

The cost is by donation. Donations fund the event, with any extra being used to purchase items for the hall kitchen as necessary and to support Selkirk Food Bank. Everyone welcome!

Dance classes

There have been dance classes in Midlem village hall since 1989!  Join the group every Wednesday 7.30pm - 9.30pm, from October to March.

FILM / THEATRE nights

We are looking at restarting regular film nights or theatre showings in the hall for Midlem residents.  We want to be led by what is of interest to the village, so please share your views in this quick survey.

Rights of way

There are a number of excellent local paths and rights of way. A small group of residents are researching routes further with the aim of keeping paths open.

Download maps of core paths to the East and to the West of the village.

wild flowers

In 2021 two zones were planted at the edge of the land behind the hall. The plan is that they will add some biodiversity. This is an ongoing experiment to ensure that the aim is achieved.

arts & crafts group

The Art and Crafts Group meets last Wednesday of every month, 2.00 - 4.00pm. Just bring along your own project to work on.

community walks

The committee organises semi-regular walks of the surrounding area, for residents. We will post details of the next walk on this webpage.

Annotated maps of popular routes can be found below:

 - Midlem to Cauldshiels return. 8 miles; 6 hrs

 - Midlem to Lilliesleaf return. 8 miles; 5.5 hrs

 - Midlem to Selkirk return. 9.5 miles; 6 hrs   Part 1   Part 2

 - Midlem to local windmill

 common land

A small group is taking expert advice prior to developing proposals for the best use of a large part of the common land located at the top entrance to the village. This will be discussed with the whole community. At present the area is partly wild and self-managed by nature. Leaving it mainly in this state is an option. In the meantime there has been a community initiative to fight through brambles and remove Himalayan balsam on Sunday mornings over successive seasons and this seems to be working.

Litter picking

At times there is litter in verges on approaches to the village. The hall committee and individuals frequently have a blitz on litter. Protective kit is obtained from SBC.
